You have the tools you need

by Elaina Lyons

I was recently venting to a friend, unloading a lot of frustrations that I’ve been feeling lately. Usually, he hits me with advice or some sort of joke that inevitably makes me feel a bit better. But this time, he said something that stopped me in my tracks:

You have the necessary tools and resources to combat this.

One more time:

You have the necessary tools and resources to combat this.

It’s such a simple phrase, but it made so much of a difference in that moment. So often, we feel like we’re drowning. Whether at work, at home, with friends, with family — whatever the case may be, it’s so easy to feel like you’re failing with no hope of turning things around. Sometimes, all it takes is the knowledge that you have what you need to push forward. Everything is already there; you just have to tap into it.

This applies to writing, too. So many authors struggle with writer’s block at one point or another. OR, they struggle to find the motivation to write when their sales tank or they get some poor reviews that hurt their self-esteem. But when those difficult times hit, just remember: You have what you need to get through it. The story you want to write is still in there, waiting to be put on paper. The characters you’ve dreamed up are still alive somewhere in the fictional universe — you just need to bring them forward.

No matter what you’re going through, no matter how much pain you’re experiencing or how much insecurity you’re feeling, you have the tools within you to push through it and past it.

You got this. It’s all there already. You just have to bring it out.
