When writing is a chore

by Elaina Lyons

I love writing. It’s the one thing in the world I feel completely connected to, as if I was meant to do it.

And yet, sometimes, it feels like a chore. Sometimes, when I sit down to write, the words don’t flow easily; the creativity just isn’t there.

In those moments, it’s easy to feel as though maybe, just maybe, writing isn’t for me. Maybe I was wrong. Maybe there’s something else I’m supposed to be doing.

The thing is, creative juices aren’t going to be flowing 24 hours a day. No matter what industry you’re in, that’s just not realistic. And, as frustrating as it is, there are many days I don’t get my best ideas during my writing sessions. I get them when I’m far away from pen, paper or my laptop. Sometimes ideas come to me in the shower, or while I’m on a client call. And, if I’m lucky, I get some really good ones when I sit down to write.

The most successful among us aren’t prodigies; they’re people who worked really fucking hard.

The point is: If we judged ourselves by how easily we accomplished our goals, we’d be disappointed quite a bit. After all, the most difficult things are usually the ones most worth doing.

So if you’re struggling to accomplish something you think should come easily to you, remember that life isn’t black and white. Most things you’ll eventually be proud of will be difficult to pull off.

And that’s OK. Do it anyway. The most successful among us aren’t prodigies; they’re people who worked really fucking hard.
