When the story writes itself

by Elaina Lyons

We all know what it’s like to stare at that blank page. You know what you want to say — it’s all in there somewhere. But it just won’t make its way out of your brain, through your fingers and onto the screen (or paper, if you’re old school).

But sometimes, every so often, the stars align and you get that killer writing session. The words come out perfectly; the story pretty much writes itself.

I love those days. They’re the absolute best. They make you feel like a million bucks — like maybe, just maybe, you do have something of value to share with the world.

I had one of those days recently. I’d been struggling with my sequel — something about the main character’s arc just hadn’t been sitting right with me. And then, with a solid boost of caffeine and a delicious bakery chocolate chip cookie, I hit a breakthrough. And, beautifully enough, it felt easy. All the stressing about what my character should do and how she should develop just melted away, and her progression just figured itself out.

Sometimes things work out that way, in writing and in life. Sometimes, if we take a step back, things have a way of working themselves out.

Thanks, caffeine. And thank you, patience. My sequel is finally making some progress again.
