I’ve done quite a few book signings now and I encounter very interesting people at every one. Some ask me questions about my book; some share stories about their own writing journey; some pick up the book, politely smile, and put it right back on the table.
But I always get a few people who tell me they, too, would like to write — they just don’t know where to start.
Here’s the cool thing about being a writer: All it takes is a little bit of skill and a whole lot of imagination.
I realize that makes this journey seem incredibly easy, and it isn’t — not by any means.
Writing is stressful, challenging and strenuous. It’s also fun, inspiring and enriching.
So what do you do if you have an idea and you don’t know where to start? Start anywhere.
It’s a misconception that you have to start writing a story at the beginning. In fact, I historically start at the end of my stories, circle back to the beginning and then fill in the middle.

There’s no right or wrong way to craft your creative process. If you have an idea, you don’t have to wait until it’s entirely fleshed out in your mind before you start putting it down on paper. Just start writing. The missing pieces will eventually fill themselves in.
And don’t worry about being the best writer or creating the most interesting, life-changing story. Just write for yourself. Write because you have something to say. And if you finish the story and feel like you want to share it, go for it.
But all you really need to have in order to write a story is an idea, a computer or some paper, and the willingness to try.
You got this.
