Get on the Web

by Elaina Lyons

I can’t count how many times I’ve seen or heard an author ask if they really need a website.

There’s a long answer and a short answer. The short answer is a loud, yelling-from-the-mountaintops, yes!

Here’s the long answer:

Just because you’re on Amazon or Barnes & Noble or Goodreads (or all three), doesn’t mean you’re set on your internet presence. For SEO (Search Engine Optimization) purposes, you need to have as much of an online identity built as possible. This makes you more searchable and, by default, easier to find.

But having a website is essential for more practical reasons, too. For example, let’s say someone finds your book on Amazon and buys it. They end up loving it, so they try to search for your website to find out more about you. Bummer! There’s nothing there. They can’t sign up for a newsletter or learn more about who you are, the projects you have in the works, and the books you’ve already published, because you’re nowhere to be found. They try to find you on social media but there aren’t any links on your website, because your website doesn’t exist.

Get my point?

As an author trying to get your name out there, it’s important for you to put yourself on the map in every way you can. That means getting on Goodreads, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and any other social platform you’d like, AND creating a website.

Get out there! Let people find you. Don’t let your writing become a hidden gem. Want to sell books? Be as accessible and searchable as possible.
