It takes a village; remember to thank yours

by Elaina Lyons

Writing is a solitary task. But publication? That involves the masses. Of course there are the people involved behind the scenes – the editors, beta readers, cover designers, etc. And then there are the readers themselves.

Readers breathe life into our words. I see my stories kind of like balloons – without helium, they can’t go anywhere. Readers are our helium.

We owe pretty much everything to the people who buy, review and recommend our books. Without them, our published words would become stagnant, resting on pages never seen.

Reading a book takes time. It takes hours out of days that are crammed with responsibilities. It takes a leap of faith that those hours won’t be wasted.

So take a minute today to thank your readers – yes, even the ones who didn’t like your work. Because every reader whose eyes fall on our pages took a chance on us. And, even if that didn’t work out and they didn’t love what we had to say, they still took the time to give us a try.

And that deserves a little gratitude.
