Several times a day, I see posts in my author Facebook groups asking if social media is really necessary for writers. More often than not, posters ask if they need social media if they’re not published yet.
As a writer with a marketing background (and the owner of a marketing company), the short answer is yes.
Let me explain.
Social media isn’t the kind of thing that becomes helpful to you overnight. Many people assume they should just start their accounts when they need them. The thing is, you need them now. It takes quite a while — months, as a matter of fact — to build social media accounts. So waiting to start your accounts until you need them is waiting too long.
It’s true, the greats like Hemingway, Fitzgerald, and Steinbeck didn’t use social media, and they made it into the writing Hall of Fame. But time’s are changing. Social media is a huge part of modern communication and exploration. It could be argued that we communicate more through social media than in person.
So while you might not want to use social media to promote your work, odds are, your fellow writers are. So if you want to get noticed, you have to get with the times, as it were.
Lean in to change. Or…you might get left behind.
