“The Love You Have,” sequel to “The Love You Know,” comes out February 1, and that means two things: 1) I’m beyond excited and 2) I’ve got to market the *expletive deleted* out of this thing.
When you’re an indie author, you don’t just write books. You’re also in charge of making sure they get noticed.
It’s true — the majority of us don’t get a huge marketing budget, a team of professionals, and a digital folder of ideas with which to get our books in front of our target audiences.
What do we have?
We have a sincere love of our work, a typically scanty budget, and a whole lot of hope.
But that’s OK! While marketing our books without the former can be difficult, it’s also not impossible. Here are three tips for getting started:
- Have a plan. As awesome as it would be for random ideas to just work, it’s highly unlikely you’ll have success without a cohesive plan or approach. This doesn’t mean you need to write down every step you’re going to take, but it does mean you should have a general strategy in mind for promoting your work, and steps for how to reach each goal.
- Don’t be afraid to pivot. But…those steps we talked about might not be super successful. So don’t be afraid to change course and try something else. If what you’re doing isn’t working, and you’ve given it enough time to be effective, give yourself the opportunity to move forward in a different direction.
- Be confident. Imposter Syndrome for indie authors is REAL. Try not to fall into the trap of feeling like you’re not good enough or worthy enough for your readers’ time. You wrote a book and you should be proud of it. Show it off! Scream from the rooftops, “I did this!” OK, maybe not really. But definitely do that metaphorically.
Marketing is certainly challenging, but it’s also absolutely necessary to get your book out there.
Don’t get discouraged; you’ve got this!
