Multitaskers, raise your hands!

by Elaina Lyons

I consider myself a classic multitasker — and not necessarily in a productive way. I tend to get distracted easily, so unless I catch myself quickly, I end up starting multiple things and finishing few.

I used to be this way with writing, too. I would start a story, get a new idea, start a new story, get frustrated with where that one was going, start a new one, and on and on.

Eventually, I had about 10 stories that I’d started and abandoned. They just sort of sat there, waiting for me to come back to them, but I never did.

When I started “The Love You Know,” I worried it would follow the same path as most of the others. But I made myself a promise that I would see it through, no matter what. And you know what? I did.

And then I wrote another one. And I didn’t abandon that one halfway through either. I didn’t start writing another one and forget all about it. I didn’t get so frustrated I just gave up and decided to try out a whole new cast of characters.

Finishing my first novel gave me the confidence that I needed to start (and finish) another one. And it made me realize that all I really needed was to show myself I could do it.

I think this lesson is applicable to so many aspects of our lives. It’s so easy to fall victim to negative self-talk, to create patterns and then continually reinforce them because we believe that’s just what we do. But it’s never too late to create new, healthy, more positive behaviors.

Sometimes, all you really need to do is prove to yourself just once that you’re capable of doing things differently.
